Link Display | home | help |
The display of a link to a web page is controlled by information stored in the html source code of the page. To learn more about the use of source data in NetInsert, please click here.
If a new web page is added to the directory, and the web page only defines the mandatory meta tag for category, the following link to the page will be shown in the specified category: (in the following the web page www.milliplex.com will be used as an example of a web page which is added to the directory)

The icon to the left in the display indicates that the status of the web page is ok (i.e. there are no problems with the page) and that a user of NetInsert should expect the link to the page to be working. By clicking on the icon a more detailed description of the page will be given, including details for the latest update, page statistics, and all defined meta tags on the page.
Since there is no title defined for the page, neither as a <title> element, nor as a meta tag, the URL to the page will be used as a title.
Since there is no description of the page in the form of a meta tag the first readable lines of text in the html source code will be used as a description.
Since the page is new in the directory, the link is showing with a "new" icon to the right. A page is considered new in the directory in the first 7 days after it has been added.
In the continuation of the example, the meta tags for title and description have been added in the html source code of the page (the meta tags can be generated using the meta tag wizard which is available in the top right hand section of a category in the directory).

After defining the meta data for the title and the description, the link to the page has now changed to include these definitions. In the next step, a hover message, a news flash and an email is added to the page.

After adding a hover message to the meta data, the message is displayed when the mouse is hovered over the link to the web page. The "i" icon indicates that a news flash has been defined in the meta data. By clicking on the icon, the news flash is displayed in a separate browser window. The email meta tag does not change the visual appearance of the link in the directory, and is only used by NetInsert to inform the web page owner if there are any problems with the page.
The NetInsert index robot continuously verifies a web page in the directory. If it discovers that the data for a web page has been changed it will signal the change with the icon for update.

If the NetInsert index robot discovers that the data for a web page has not been changed in a long time, the link to the page will be shaded in a light blue color.

Link display if there are problems with the page
NetInsert will regularly verify all web pages in the directory. In such a procedure, NetInsert may find that there are problems with a page. There may be many different causes of problems with a page. Some of the most common are:
In order to signal that there problems with a page, the display of the link to the page will change in the directory. In the continuation of this example, the mandatory meta tag for netinsert has been removed from the html source.
Html source | ||||
<meta name="title" content="Milliplex"> <meta name="description" content="Software applications for the Internet"> <meta name="news" content="A new release is now available"> <meta name="email" content="info@milliplex.com"> |
||||
Link display in directory | ||||
|
The first time a verification of the page fails the display of the link to the page will change to signal a warning. In the warning state, all other icons other than the warning icons will be disabled, as well as the newsflash. The reason that the page is indicated with a warning is shown by hovering the mouse over the title of the page.
In the next step the page is again verified by NetInsert and the problem persists, i.e. the meta tag for category (netinsert) is still missing.
Html source | ||||
<meta name="title" content="Milliplex"> <meta name="description" content="Software applications for the Internet"> <meta name="news" content="A new release is now available"> <meta name="email" content="info@milliplex.com"> |
||||

|
The second consecutive time a verification of the page fails the display of the link to the page will change to signal an error. All pages which are displayed with the error icon are on probation. If the page does not improve during probation the link to the page will be removed from the directory after the end of the probation period. The probation period is currently 7 days. If a meta tag for email is defined in the html source code of the page, an email will be sent to notify the web page owner that the page is on probation.
